Nuthatch & the Seed #52WeeksofWatercolourBirds #watercolor #DeliberatelyCreative

Image
I'm playing with some new pan watercolors; a mix of Winsor Newton and Sennelier professional paints.  I overworked this painting, trying to get the beak and colors rights, but the pigments are still strong.  On better paper, I think the difference in paint quality would really be something.

The painting was a  challenge to do. It came from a fantastic photo that Mark Bergeron shared on the Facebook group Deliberately Creative, and the photo had exquisite detail.  You'd think that would be helpful, but sometimes blurry is easier to do, lol.

Anhinga's Wings #52WeeksOfWatercolourBirds #Watercolor #DeliberatelyCreative

If you are looking for my giveaway of Simona Cordara's ''Ancient Patterns for Modern Tangling' EBook, go here.

Recently, I joined a Facebook group called Deliberately Creative.  Members share photos and allow other members to use for their creative endeavors.

One of my friends, Lynne Howard, posted a fabulous photo of  an Anhinga (aka Snakebird, aka Water Turkey), which she, herself also painted using acrylics.  I've been itching to try my hand at it since I saw her painting, and finally this weekend I had the time.

I think Lynne did much better with her color choices, but I had great fun tackling this bird!

Simona has been a part of the Zentangle®/Tangling/Pattern drawing community since 2010 and has co-written three books on tangling.  She's just  published 'Ancient Patterns for Modern Tangling' in a  PDF EBook format.

That EBook is what I'm here to review today, Giveaway is now closed.

What's It All About
'Ancient Patterns for Modern Tangling' looks briefly at ancient patterns (aka motifs) and uses them as prompts to help you create your own patterns. There are 13 new patterns included, as well. The book is not about the Zentangle method, but does use the step-outs to show how patterns can be created.

Some of the most ancient motifs are used here, such as Circles, the Eye, and the Bird Goddess. You are shown how to add to these patterns, break them down and use them to create new patterns for yourself.

Simona encourages the reader to pick up the pen and start creating patterns immediately.  She tel…

Review of '3D Tangle: Shading Case Studies' EBook by Eni Oken #Zentangle #EniOken #Zentangle-InspiredArt

Image
If you are into Zentangle® on social media, you have probably seen some of Eni Oken's fabulous gems and intricately shaded tangles. She's written several Ebooks on the subject, and her latest is '3D Tangle: 15 Shading Case Studies'.  Today I'm here  to review this PDF Ebook.

Giveaway has ended.

Specs
Format: PDF Ebook
No. of Pages: 48

What's It All About
'3D Tangle: 15 Shading Case Studies' is a text on shading techniques that can be used to enhance your patterns.  Tremendously.  The shading techniques covered are time-proven ones that can be used in any drawing, so this book will be of interest to anyone wants to learn more about shading, even if they aren't already tangle enthusiasts.

The book is not a Zentangle how-to with step-outs and new patterns. It does provide a resource link where you can look up the step-outs for patterns used, but it doesn't supply the step-outs themselves.

Traditionally Zentangle or Tangle books are picture-heavy with…

Spotted Towhee - Week 25 of '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds' #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds #Watercolor #Yarka

Image
Meh.  That's kind of how I was feeling today, and I think it shows in the painting.  I wasn't too inspired by the Spotted Towhee, and not really into painting.  But it was the last day of class for this session, so painted I did.

Now that class is over, I'm going to have to work to keep painting my weekly birds!

When you look at today's post, you might think the shading style is a little different from my usual.  You'd be right.
Last week, Eni Oken sent me a copy of her latest PDF Ebook '3D Tangle: Shading Case Studies', and I'll be reviewing it on Sunday, June 19.  Note that date, because I'll also be hosting a giveaway for the book!  And it is going to be both U.S. AND International!

I'd swear that I already shared this drawing, but I can't find it anywhere, so apologies if you're thinking 'Not that one again!"  I'd think people would remember a cat that look suspiciously like it's a cat-turtle-tiger hybrid

Killdeer #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds' #Watercolor #Killdeer

Image
I believe I'm a week ahead, but I wanted to continue with the theme in watercolor class.

Killdeer are one of those birds that pretend to have a broken wing and try to lead you away from their nest.  One of them nested close to my house, and each morning it would try to lead my car away.  Distressing because it was hard to see where the bird was, and I was afraid I'd run over it.   I haven't seen it lately, and I'm hoping that's because the young have hatched and are old enough to leave the nest, but I fear the worst.

This is the first time, I've attempted to paint a bird in flight.  Not sure I got the proportions correct, but overall I'm happy with it.

Great Grey Owl-Week 23 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #52WeeksOfWatercolourBirds #Watercolor #Yarka

Image
Week 23 of '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.  I'm still working on the theme of the 'Pacific Northwest' in my watercolor class.  Since I hadn't painted an owl for either of these projects, I decided it was well past time.

7x10 inches was a bit small for a huge bird like this, so I went with a line and wash in order to get the ticking of the feathers.

And I had a second agenda in choosing a wise owl.  Somebody needs to tell me how in the world this comes to be the 23rd week of 2016.  We just celebrated New Years yesterday.  Right?  Maybe the owl knows what is going on with the time continuum, 'cause something is messed up somewhere!
