Complementary Color Mandala #Mijello #MissionGold #Watercolor

I've been working a bit larger than usual for me, using 10.5 x 10.5 inch paper.  I decided to do another mandala based on those I saw on Pat Howard's  Painted Prism blog.  The problem with this size, of course, is that I can't scan most of the paintings and have to take a photo instead.

It isn't entirely clear on Pat's blog what is being done with the mandalas, but I think it's easy enough to decide for yourself what to do.  In this case, I chose three colors (Permanent Yellow Deep, Permanent Red Deep, Prussian Blue) from my Mijello Mission gold palette, and mixed to get secondary orange, green and violet.  I chose colors that I felt were close in temperature (warm-yellow biased or cold-blue biased) and that I felt would mix clear bright colors, which I think they did.  That the reason for mandalas like this.  You can see exactly how well the colors mix.

I painted with lots of pigment in the center to get the deepest value, then lifted color from the center, to see how staining each was. Each section, I negative painted around the petals with moderate value, and I blotted in a few places to get a range of values.  The petals were painted with the complementary color (the color across from it on the wheel), trying to keep the values as light as possible.  Then I used the complementary color to shade.  In essence, this shading becomes a mix of ALL the colors on the wheel and an example of  how muddy the colors might get.  Not very muddy!

I highly recommend visiting the Painted Prism blog.  Pat doesn't have a tutorial for these mandalas, but she has many other free tutorials you can read online for free, or buy as a PDF for a good price.  Her work is beautiful, her tutorials excellent, and it's just a great resource.

Broken Zipper #Zentangle #ZentangleInspiredArt #PenAndInk

I've actually finished all the pages in my Grandluxe Earth Care Sketchbook.  but have only been posting them slowly.  I wish I could find another in this format.  It's a 5.5 x 5.5 inch square with 22 sheets/48 pages.  Good paper, so it's a nice sketchbook for this kind of work.

I didn't write down which pens I used, unfortunately.  I like to keep track of things like that (why? Beats me, but I do!).

Pastry in Deli Paper #Zentangle #ZentangleInspiredArt #PenAndInk

This is another drawing that I did in my Grandluxe Earth Care Sketch Book.

This book is full now, and I haven't been able to find one in the same format, though I've ordered pocket versions with  (hopefully) the same paper.

This version comes with plain heavy cardboard covers.  I carefully peeled off the Earth Care label and decorated them with gelli prints, then put the label back on (because I like to keep the informational stuff and I like the look).

Bird's Eye View of the Rose #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Strathmore

There was no watercolor class this week, but we were given homework, asked to paint another white rose using only three pigments.  I used Sennelier Indian Yellow,  M. Graham' Quinacridone Violet, and Winsor Newton Winsor Blue on Strathmore's Imperial 140 Hot Press paper,  The brushes used were Silver Black Velvet 1 inch flat, and size 6 round.

I really like the Imperial paper in all three types-cold press, hot press and rough.  It's one of Strathmore's 500 professional series and although it's rated as 140 lb, it feels almost like 300 lb, so it doesn't need stretching or taping down.

My reference photo came from the Morguefile archive.

Everything's Coming Up Roses #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Strathmore

Last week's watercolor class had us painting up roses.  I went a little larger than I usually do, painting on a 10 x 10 sheet of paper.  This was supposed to be my warm-up, but of course I couldn't stop once I got started.

Done on Strathmore Imperial 140 lb Cold Press (which I quite like by the way).  It's quite sturdy, feeling more like a 200 lb and not needing to be stretched or taped down.  The pigments used were Daniel Smith New Gamboge, Winsor Newton Cobalt Blue and Permanent Rose. The brushes were Silver Black Velvet flat 1 inch, and size 16 round.

The Hills Have Eyes? #Zentangle #WatercolorGraphite #StillmanAndBirn

I'm allergic to graphite and it doesn't really matter what form it is, pencil, powder or in this case - watercolor. Plus, I don't like the mess it makes when it smears everywhere.

Still, I'm a curious cat, and when I saw the Artgraf watercolor graphite, I decided to try it out, thinking that perhaps the water would keep the dust down, and help with the allergy and the mess.

It did help a bit.  I still got the tickle in my throat, and my eyes watered some, but I don't think it was quite as bad as usual.  It still smeared just a bit.

Some pros and cons.  The brush makes a difference. The main difference with most pencils is in the softness of the lead.  With a brush, you can spread larger amounts of graphite, getting a darker value quickly.  It's difficult to get lines, so you probably wouldn't use it for a line drawing without using ink for the lines as I did here. But with the right brush, you could get lines. You can use a dry brush technique to get a scumbled effect.

The graphite is erasable once it dries, but on this paper at least, it only lightens a bit rather than erasing completely.

I'd thought about doing a thorough review, but, alas, I don't really want to push the allergy, and this will remain a product I use sparingly.  I do like it better than pencil, but I still prefer shading with my pen.

Oh Oriole! - Week 39 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Gettmg back to the feel of my other pigment brands.  I do like the Mijello, but I think I'll stay with the other brands for a while.

'

Done using Winsor Newton: Lemon Yellow, Winsor Yellow, Winsor Blue  Daniel Smith: New Gamboge, Sennelier: Indian Yellow, Blue Anthaquinone, Phthalo Green Light, Sap Green, QOR: Green Gold, and M Graham: Ultramarine Violet.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

My reference photo came from the Morguefile archive.

Mandala in B&W and Color - #GraphicLiner #Koi #WaterbrushPens

This mandala was done using a Graphic Liner pen and Sakura's Koi Waterbrush Pens in a Grandluxe Earth Care Sketch Book.  (Feel free to right-click, and save the b&w image to print out and color for yourself).

I like this Earth Care sketch book, which I bought on Amazon quite a while ago.  I can't find the same format, and I've ordered Grandluxe's Grandluxe Cream and Blue Monolette Lined and Perforated Blank Notebooks Compact Set, Set of 2, 3.5 x 5.5 Inches to see if it's the same paper.  If it is, I may do a giveaway, though I'll probably have to add something else to it.  These were so cheap, the S&H would be more!

I used Sakura Koi watercolor brushes to color this.  They are great when you want saturated intense color without effort (not so good, if you want tints, muted colors or pale areas).

Yellow Warbler - Week 38 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Yes.  I switched from using the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment set, and went back to my own customized set of Winsor Newton and Sennelier Pan paints mixed with a few favorites from M. Graham, Qor, and Daniel Smith.

Don't get me wrong.  I really like the Mijello Mission Gold paints.  The intensity is great, the pigments rewet beautifully, and there is a consistency of handling across the pigments that is fantastic.  But they do flow differently than most other brands, and I've had problems with that flow on this particular paper.

The paper is the Fluid 140 lb cold-press that Global Arts Materials uses in their watercolor journals.  I find it to be a reasonably high-end student grade - a good bang for the lesser buck.  I don't expect to get the best results with it, but neither do I usually have as many problems as I have had with the Mijello.

I've used other brand pigments, both professional and student, on this paper and been pleased, and I've been using the Mission Gold on other papers and been pleased, so I think it is just a bad mix.

Done using Winsor Newton Lemon Yellow, Winsor Yellow, Sepia and Sennelier Indian Yellow, Cerulean Blue and M Graham Quinacridone Rust.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

Egret On the Wing - Week 37 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

My background wasn't quite as streaky as it looks in the scan, but it is a bit streaky.  The watercolor paper buckled a bit, making it difficult to scan.

That said, I do find the Mijello Mission Gold paints don't like the paper in my Global Arts book very well. I've found the paints do flow differently than most other paints.  It hasn't really been an issue for me though, except on this watercolor paper.

I think I'm going to switch off to a different brand for the remaining birds.

Done using Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set and Daniel Smith's Iridescent Silver (
which doesn't really show to advantage in the scan).

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

Gift-wrapped Birdhouse in Pen and Ink #Stillman&Birn #PenAndInk #Birdhouse

I was just feeling in the mood the doodle lines, and had nothing much in mind.  As usual after a drawing a bit, something made itself known  to me, and I ended up with a strange looking bird house.  I decided it was a birdhouse in fancy gift-wrap.

Done with Pigma Micron in a Stillman & Birn Beta series sketchbook.

The Goat at Coelho Vineyards in B&W and Color #KDAllegriClasses #Watercolor #StillmanAndBirn

The last session of the K.D. Allegri's watercolor class for Fall was to do Barnyard Animals.  I had taken a photo of a goat during a Plein Air session at Coelho Vineyards in Amity, Oregon and decided to use that.

But I wanted to do my value study using my electric Cuttlelola Dotspen.  Usually watercolor over pen and ink is called a line and wash.  If the drawing is all done in stippling, does that make it a dot and wash?

Here's the drawing after I colored it in with watercolor.

Quail in Payne's Gray #WorldWatercolorGroup #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds #Watercolor

Ah, the perils of growing old.  I started with the intent to make week 42 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' a monochromatic painting using only Payne's Gray, because this bird WAS Payne's Gray in living color!

So I blocked out the initial layer of Payne's Gray for the bird, and walked off to let it dry.  When I sat down and started the background, I layed down a layer of Sap Green, and THEN remembered what I initially meant to do.  *sigh*    Damage done, I incorporated the Sap Green and some Pyrrole Scarlet into the darker values of the bird.

I had done heavy scraping with the painting on the other side, leaving the paper pretty fragile, so I kept this simple, with no lifting and only a couple of glazes.  I'm happy with it, even though it wasn't quite what I started out to do.

Done using Sennelier Payne's Gray,  and Sap Green and Daniel Smith Pyrrole Scarlet and Iridescent Silver.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

My reference photo came from the Morguefile archive.

Penguin Under Water-Week 36 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

It was interesting trying to get the perspective of this penguin's face.  I wouldn't want to meet this fellow in a strange alley....or swimming pool!

Done using Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set and Daniel Smith's Iridescent Silver (
which doesn't really show to advantage in the scan). Painted with an Escoda Versatil Travel brush size 16.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

Great Googly Green Heron Week 35 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

The reference photo I found at the Morguefile archive, identified this as a Green Heron.  I'm not sure if is because there wasn't a spec of green on the bird. I think this may have been the hardest bird yet because the proportions are so strange!

Done using Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set, Daniel Smith's Iridescent Blue Sapphire and Silver Black Velvet Brushes Round size 6 and size 16.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

Flamingo Fancy #Week 34 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Turns out the Red Orange (P073) in the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set, is a perfect flamingo pigment.  I used glazes of the Permanent Rose (PV19) for the cooler, lighter shadows, and  mixes of Permanent Rose and Cerulean Blue (which would be Phthalo Blue (PB15:3) in other brands) for the purple and dark shadow colors.

The grass was Bamboo Green (PG36) with glazes of Permanent Yellow Light (PY154).  I also glazed the lightest part of the bird's neck and back with this color.

The water was painted with mixes of the Bamboo Green, Cerulean Blue and Permanent Yellow Light.

I think I may do a series of flamingoes, or something of the like that lets me use more of these colors.

I used Silver Black Velvet Brushes Round size 6 and size 16.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

From Clovelly to Crown Point #Mijello #MissionGold #WorldWatercolorGroup

The class theme for the day was building structures, and I discovered that the Ultramarine Blue in the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment set does granulate with enough water, and makes some very nice colors when mixed with the Perylene Maroon.

I was trying to remember how to paint using the idealistic style of Zoltan Szabo, but I was focusing a bit too much on those mixes.  Cobalt Blue was used for the sky and green gold with the mixes for the grasses.

The reference photo is one I took in '75, while visiting Clovelly by the Sea in Devon, England.

I need to try it again, with some brighter colors I think.

I still had enough time to do a quick painting before class was over.  Using the same color combo, I used a reference photo I'd taken of Crown Point in Oregon.

Another painting I need to do over, I think, rather than trying to save it, but this does a good job of establishing values.  The Vista House at Crown Point is a lovely and complex building.  I think using a larger size or closer focus on the building would help.

Sandhill Crane - Week 32 of '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

This painting isn't quite done, but I'm not quite sure what else I need to do.  I'm afraid I'll just end up messing it up, so I'm leaving it until inspiration strikes.

I used the Mijello Mission Gold Pure Pigment Watercolor Set. and Silver Black Velvet Brushes Round size 6 and 1 inch flat.

This bird was done in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.
