Got lemons, make lemonade. Got marker bleed-thru, make bleedthrumanade.
Ingredients: Letraset Promarkers; Letraset Fineliner 0.5; Faber-Castell Big Brush; White Pentel Sunburst Gel Pen; Micron Pigma .005; Paperblanks Antique Map journal.
People have asked how I get the inspiration to make the two sides of my bleedthrumanade different so I thought I'd talk about what I did with Rooftops & Lizard Wizard.
I colored the front of the page, using the blender pen throughout. I did not add any color to the back of the page.
I wanted to play with my newest tangle pattern Eiffel, so I ignored color and made an Eiffel border to start off Rooftops (and I didn't know it would be Rooftops-there was no planning). Then I drew around each section of color to make my string. Any 'slivers' of color, like the bits of orange here and there, I just made part of the section around them.
Using the Letraset Fineliner .05, I drew the tangles, then shaded with the Micron .005. I tried adding a few highlights with gel pen, but they didn't show, so I gave it up.
When I turned to the back of the page, I rotated my journal, and looked for shapes. At that point, I didn't see any, but I did notice some fabric-like ripples in the lower right. This was just a faint suggestion caused where the shading was heaviest on the ivory section, and the way the green bordered it. Once I'd seen those, I started looking at the patterns of light and dark to find more ripples. I switched to the Big Brush pen for a very bold line, and outlined my ripples, to get a fabric like look. I also saw an egg shape. When the egg shape was drawn, I saw a 'bonnet', and a 'ruffle'.
I want to discuss these 'shapes' a bit, because they are very subjective. If I asked someone to find the 'bonnet' or 'egg' they'd probably say they couldn't. But if I pointed to them and traced the outline, they usually say oh yeah! I see it. It's a bit like looking at clouds. Search for blobs, ripples and curves. If you see something within a minute or two, start adding lines. If you don't, move on to another method. This should be fluffly and fun, not work.
The lizard had made himself known to me at this point, so I added his eye and nose. Then I tangled, and there you have it.
To summarize: for the front, other than Eiffel, I used the color to dictate my string. On the back, I switched orientation, looked for shapes instead of color, and used a bolder pen to change the line.

I love this Bleedthrumanade method. I started on my first one yesterday (June 8th 2011) but I'm not finished yet. When I discovered this method yesterday while at work, I made a shopping list for myself and went to Dick Blicks after work and blew $ 131 worth of art materials to start this project.
ReplyDeleteI bought some Copic Markers with a blender, but I also purchased an 8 pack of really fat Sharpie Markers. Sharpie markers tend to bleed through even Card Stock paper if you don't watch out. I purchased 20 pads of drawing paper that's about 60 lbs with 100 pages and I'm going to fill that pad up. These Pads are cool....they have a perforated line to makee a clean tear of you wish to remove the pages unlike most drawing pads. Who thought of this method? Who ever did, great job with the ideas!
