Translation:  Terraced gardens are among the most ancient forms of gardening, especially in mountainous climes.  The terraces prevent run-off and soil erosion, but I'm certain mischievous children couldn't resist sending stones and dirt clods tumbling down on people below.

Sort of the ancient day equivalent of throwing water balloons off a balcony.
