This was a 'save' from a page of rough sketches and experiments in my softcover Stillman & Birn Beta series sketchbook.
I'd tested some watercolor graphite, a couple of markers, and done some very rough fingernail compositions on this page, and decided to just draw right over it. I started the patterns on both ends, and the one eye that was peeking out at me made me think of someone peeping through harem curtains (I was watching a movie about Alexander the Great at the time, so that probably had some influence).
Once I'd drawn my patterns and a second eye, I used a mix of Tombow, Stabilio and Distress markers to color it all in.
