I've been decorating small tins lately. Some of them will end up as gifts and some are going to be watercolor palettes for myself.
This was one of the tiny Altoids tins. It isn't really quite as textured as the camera makes it look.
I sanded the tin lightly, painted it with three coats of white gesso and then painted my picture using the colors that will be in the tin - Yellow Cadmium, Rose Dore, Cobalt Blue and Yellow Ochre.
After the watercolor was dry I sprayed with a varnish so that it won't run if it gets re-wet.
