Mis?Adventures in Watercolor-Glazing

Image
Watercolor glazing.  It sounds so exotic.

Really, it is just layering washes of transparent color on your paper.   The trick is in choosing your colors well because not all colors are equal in transparency.

I've haven't been too happy with the results that I get with my Koi paints and decided to focus on glazing for a while.  I don't like doing charts, so I did a couple of paintings.

The first is inspired by Robert Burridge's pears. He works in acrylic, and I'm not attempting to emulate his style, but I love this little video he did, showing how easily negative space can become a focus.  I'd been thinking about that for some reason, and decided to use negative space that way in my glazing exercise.

Then I did an exercise from 'The Tao of Watercolor'by Jeanne Carbonetti.  I didn't have any of the colors she called for, so I attempted to mix them as closely as I could.  My 'turquoise' got a little muddy, lol! This is the first painting I'v…

The Daycraft Cookie bookie cat survives drowning

My parents did NOT name me Grace.  There is a good reason for that!
So I'm sitting in my chair surrounded by art supplies.  In front of me is a folding table with my easel, my markers, several books on watercolor, and several journals, all stacked high like a leaning tower of ...well...books and journals.
Beside me is a stool covered with a towel, holding my adorable little field sketch kit of Koi watercolor paints, various brushes and a nice-sized bucket of fresh water.  I'm holding a board and noodling away on the watercolor paper taped to it.
I'm sure you see inevitable looming.
Although the scene was set quite some time before, the drama begins when the phone rings.  Even though I have no reason to believe it is anything but telemarketer, I jump to my feet quickly.  The table must have been startled, because it jumped up and met my hip halfway (yes!  That's exactly what happened).  My tower of books remained steady. Until the easel hit it.
The tower trembled, and I reac…

Bleedthrumanade for the last Saturday in July

Got Lemons, make Lemonade. Got Marker Bleedthru, make Bleedthrumanade.

Ingredients: Letraset Promarkers & fineliner, Pentel Sunburst Gel Pen, Paperblanks Journal. Since I used Promarkers with the UItraFine Nib attachment to do the tangling on the Front, there was additional bleedthru, which led to the lace-like texture on the light green on the back. I used a Letraset Fineliner on the back for the tangling.

Curious to know what colors will be available in the new Letraset Flexmarkers?  Check out the chart at the Letraset blog.

I'm excited about these markers.  The one thing I miss with the Promarkers is a brush tip.  Now with the Flexmarkers, I'll have it, plus a whole new range of colors that aren't available in Promarkers.  Oh, my aching pocketbook!  Good thing they aren't coming out until September--I'll have a chance to save up.

First look at the new Letraset Flex marker

Letraset announces the upcoming release of an Alcohol Based Brush Marker Pen, the FlexMarker.  A brush marker is more flexible than the bullet nib, so you'll have more control with varying line width.  Plus 51 of the 72 FlexMarker colors are different than the Promarker colors, so you don't have to buy colors you already have just to get the more flexible nib.

Dollar Tree for your Mixed Media

Image
I've been playing around with an Art Journal for a while now, just trying various things.  I pamphlet stitched some thin card stock and then gessoed it to within an inch of it's life.  I was going to wait until I was done to share, but yesterday I went to Dollar Tree and picked up a couple of things that I think were pretty snazzy, and thought some of you might like to see if you can find some.
The first, if you look at the picture on the right, is that muddy stuff.  It doesn't show to well in the photo, but it's from a little leather repair kit, and has a pebbly texture.  You get a piece of loosely woven fabric, a little jar of compound, and a 'grain sheet' that you press into the wet compound.  It looks pretty cool.
The second thing I found, if you'll look toward the mid-bottom of the picture on the right, you see a transparent face peering out from under the zentangle.  It's from a Window Cling Decal set of dollars and cents.  The cling sticks without …

I got a Hake (pronounced Hockey, for those who care about such things) brush, and that helped quite a bit with the washes, though I still can't get a really juicy wash without losing most of my color. I think that might be the paint. Or it could be me, lol!

Letraset Ultra Fine Nibs-Review & Giveaway + Bleedthrumanade

Image
Letraset Ultra-Fine Nibs-Review & Giveaway + Bleedthrumanade & Weekly Challenge.  Wow!  I've got a lot to get through, so I better get cracking!  If you are here just for the giveaway, scroll down past the zentangle drawings. The Review:  If you haven't heard, Letraset now has Ultra-Fine nib attachments for their Promarker.  They come in packages of three and Paul at Letraset was kind enough to send me a couple of the 3-packs. (Ahh--a couple of packs.  You see where this is going.  But be patient and read on. There's more to the giveaway!) The minute I heard about these nibs I knew what I'd do with them--tangle.  Ever get tired of a black line for drawing your zentangles?  Now, you are only limited by the number of your Promarkers! As you can see from the insert above, the nib is an attachment that you screw on over the bullet point of a Promarker.  It goes on easily (even for me!).  The flyer says that the ink starts flowing within seconds.  I found it began to f…

Mis?Adventures in Watercolor-the graduated wash II

Image
I can't get my washes wet enough to flow into each other. I'm not sure if that is the paper, the brushes, or just me.  Nonetheless, I like the painting (exercise from 'Mastering the Watercolor Wash' byJoe Garcia.).

These exercises only take about an hour and a half, and most of that is waiting for the washes to dry before moving on the next.  Proof that less is more.

Another exercise from 'Mastering the Watercolor Wash' by Joe Garcia. I don't think I quite got the effect I was supposed to.  But I like the highlights, which were created by scraping an exacto knife gently across the paper after the last wash dries.

Mis?Adventures in Watercolor on a Busy Weekend

Image
It's been a busy weekend.  Today is hubby's birthday, so we've celebrating, and I've had little time for artwork.  I did get a couple of quick watercolor 'sketches' done, but that's about it.

This first is another exercise from "Mastering the Watercolor Wash" by Joe Garcia.  It was supposed to be an exercise in the flat wash, but I found the instructions a little vague, and ended up doing my own thing.  More wet-into-wet than flat, I think.  I'm having trouble with my Koi field kit.  The pans are so small that I'm having a problem getting enough paint ready to take advantage of the wet, even though I'm only working on a 6x6.  Ah well.  I'm still learning from it.

I'm going to continue with the book.  Even though I find the instructions a bit vague, I love the exercises themselves.  The subject matter is beautiful, and they aren't difficult to accomplish.  I'm not even using the right colors (don't have 'em), and …

AAnd we have the last bit of the bleedthrumande I created in my Scottish Journal.  I combined this with Laura Harms' weekly challenge #31-Fairyland.  Being a Harry Dresden (novel) fan, I view the Fey as being more martial than twinkly, and my challenge response reflects that, lol.

Monday's Mis?Adventures in Watercolor

Image
Spent most of my artistic day gessoing some stuff and practicing with my Koi watercolors.
I did this exercise from 'Mastering the Watercolor Wash' by Joe Garcia.  This exercise was in creating a flat wash.  I didn't quite succeed, but I'm happy enough.  One thing I did discover. I found some 300 lb Fabriano Artistico Warm Press that I forgot I had.  This is NOT cheap paper, but oh my.... People--it isn't just the quality of your paint.  Paper matters!
I didn't have the colors suggested in the book, so I just used the colors closest in value in my Koi Field kit.  This is a good exercise.  I'll be doing it again.

After doing this exercise, I was again impressed with the fact that I need to get a feel for the concentration--the amount of water to the amount of paint--in my mixes.  I decided to play with that.  No exercises from anywhere, I just did a zentangle.  Each section was a different color, and I tried to get at least three values just by adding more wa…

First attempt & mini-review of Autodesk Sketchbook Copic Edition

Image
Okay!  If I had a stylus, instead of a mouse that wrecks havoc with my wrist, I just might be tempted to give up my pens, markers & paints.  (Well, probably not.  Digital still hasn't captured that visceral 'something' that you get when you scrawl ink across the page or smell the paint, fresh from the tube, lol!)

But.  I've fallen in love with both Scribbler Too-a funky little drawing program, and this latest edition of Autodesk Sketchbook Copic Edition.  (I didn't review Scribbler Too--you have to try it.  There's just no explaining what it is or how it works.  You're up and running with it immediately though.  No real learning curve.)

But on to Sketchbook.

This new version of Sketchbook is easier to explain.  It's a freelimited edition of Sketchbook Pro with 72 of the new Copic colors that have been added to the Pro version.  It's a digital program that allows you to draw or color using brushes that simulate (very nicely) Copic markers with tip…
