Petal Plant Fantasy Step-out #FantasyLandscape #Step-out #DrawingTutorial

I want to get enough of these fantasy step-outs out so people will be able to start drawing their own landscapes but I'm having trouble keeping up with my own self-imposed schedule and didn't have a chance to draw an example.   You can see this pattern in a drawing here though.

Here's another pattern in my series of fantasy step-outs (I'll probably end up calling these something else eventually).

These aren't tangle patterns, though I'm using the familiar step-out technique to show you how to do them.  But then Walter Foster books, and others, have been using this kind of technique forever.  As you'll see in the drawing below the step-out, I plan to do several other step-outs so you can draw your own fantasy landscapes.

Here are a couple of drawings I did - drawing them to an inner dialogue, where I thought about the possible step-outs I wanted to do, and ideas I wanted to convey.  These weren't drawn with artistic ideals in mind, just what I thinking about as I drew and colored.  Some of the step-outs may end up with different names, or I might decide not to do them, in favor of something else that occurs to me.

Some of these step-outs were created with something specific in mind.  In the case of Sun Arrows, I'm hoping it will he…

I used a technique that I saw somewhere (and I wish I had kept the link or written the name of the book where I found it).  You splatter masking fluid at random, let it dry and paint a wash of watercolor over it.  When that wash dries, you splatter more masking fluid, and repeat.  Once you've finished you remove the masking fluid and have splatters of underlying color.

I need to practice my splattering methods, but I like the effect.

I'm using a Stillman and Birn 9x12 Beta series wirebound sketchbook for all my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Paintings 2017'.
The brushes used were Silver Black Velvet Rounds, size 8 and 16 and a Princeton Snap brush round size 4 for lifting color and small detail. The pigments used were Daniel Smith Wisteria, Mijello Mission Gold Cobalt Blue, Permanent Rose, Bamboo Green, Viridian, Ivory Black and Lemon Yellow,

I've decided that the new Princeton Snap brushes I'm using are not a good choice for the Stillman & Birn Beta paper.  They are stiff enough that they leave lines (which might be good if you are trying for an inscribed look), and seem to dissolve some of the paint from previous layers when you add glazes.  It's more apparent when I'm using the larger size brushes like the size 16 and 20 rounds.

This isn't entirely the fault of the brushes.  Both of those things are also an attribute of the paper, which I'm aware of, and try to incorporate into the techniques I use with this paper.  However, the combination seems to be too much of same thing.  So I'm going back to my Silver Black Velvet brushes for my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Paper' series.

I'm so behind with my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Paintings'.  By more than a month!  I've been spending too much time with reviews and ballpoint drawings - but I've been having fun!

I think I got a little ambitious with the amount of detail for a 5.5  x 8.3 inch (14.8 x 21 cm) journal, but it all fit.  The scan threw in some highlights in the deep dark on the right.  They're caused by rippling in the paper that isn't apparent to the eye

Coffee with the Walrus #ExaclairUSA @ZebraPen #BallpointDrawing

Image
I painted a coffee wash on a page in my Rhodiarama Soft Cover journal and added a few coffee crystals for some interest (one ended being the walrus eye).

The walrus was drawn with using purple and dark green Zebra Z-Grip pens.  The tusks, nose, whiskers, sand and some texture in the background was added with a white acrylic marker.  The scanner didn't pick up the white very well.

Not just for Easter!

Sorry, these are a little rough.  The idea popped into my head, just yesterday, and I didn't have much time to work on them.

Mini Review of Magnani Italia watercolor paper #Watercolor @LegionPaper #MagnaniItalia

Permanent Rose, Indian Yellow, and Phthalocyanine Green on Aquarello Magnani Italia 140# Cold Press watercolor paper.

This is another one of the watercolor papers that was included with the Legion Paper Watercolor sampler.

This is an interesting paper.  This painting was an exploration of negative painting with both hard and soft edges.  The paper was thoroughly saturated on both sides, but even though I did not tape it down, there was only a little curling, whih straightened out on its own, once the paper was dry.

While using it, I was thinking that it was a bit like print-making paper, so I wasn't surprised when I read on the website that it is used for that purpose.

It has a soft surface, almost a cloth-like texture, especially when it is wet.  I did this in my watercolor cloth, and three different people remarked on that.  The color exploded but didn't sink in immediately, so both hard and soft edges were easy to control.

I could not lift color - but I used colors that a…

I've decided to call these kind of patterns Fantasy Step Outs since they use the same step out system, and could easily be used in a Zentangle drawing, but are too reality-based for the non-objective traditional Zentangle.

Popcorn Trees and Popcorn Leaves Step-out #FantasyLandscape #Step-out #DrawingTutorial

These two patterns don't quite fit the norm for Zentangle,  but I've noticed that lots of us tanglers like to do fantasy landscapes on occasion.  I started doing these on one of them myself, and thought other people might like step-outs for them.

I'm going to call these Fantasy Step-outs.

I had some bleed-thru dots of ink on this one page, but decided I'd use them in my example for Popcorn leave, To quote Bob Ross, "Let's make them birds, yeah, they're birds now."

Review: Tombow Advanced Lettering Set #Tombow #Lettering #ExaclairInc

Image
Recently, I was sent a Tombow Advanced Lettering Set to try out.  I found it to be tres cool, and spent my beach vacation playing with it. I thought I'd let you know what is included in the set, and what I found out about how they work.

The set includes:
Four Dual Tip Brush Pens-685:Deep Magenta, 815: Cherry, 373: Sea Blue, and N15: Black plus N00: Colorless blender pen flexible brush tip for big, bold letters   fine tip for detailIdeal for coloring, fine art, illustrations, doodling, journaling, hand lettering and moreWater-basedBlendableOdorlessTips self-clean after blending The Tombow Dual Tip Brush pens have a large flexible nylon tip on one end, and a hard nylon-tip on the other.  This gives you a great deal of range in your strokes whether lettering or drawing.  The broad tip is also excellent for coloring in large areas.  The addition of the two Fudenosuke and the twin-tipped Mono marker gives you much the same range on a smaller scale.

Although the word 'pens' is us…
