Malachite Kingfisher: Week 52 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

If you are here for the giveaway of a Rhodiarama Softcover DotGrid Journal, you can find it here.

It's finished! I've painted 52 birds - well, actually more than 52 because I did a few outside of my journal.

I always itch to finish towards the end of a journal, but I've really enjoyed discovering new species of birds and getting re-acquainted with ones I've known.  I am going to do something similar for 2017, though I haven't decided for sure if I'll go with a theme, or be a little more loose.  I may just commit to doing a painting every week.  I've already bought myself a Stillman & Birn 9 x 12 Beta sketchbook for the purpose.

Reference Photo from the Pixabay photo  archive.

This bird was painted in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

Gem-Brace, a new tangle pattern #Zentangle #Zentangle-InspiredArt #TanglePatterns

On Monday, I posted a review (and a giveaway) on the new Rhodiarama Softcover dot grid notebook. I don't know if it's because the New Year is almost here, or just because I haven't created any new patterns for a while, but I'm on a roll.

Be sure to visit my blog on Thursday for another tangle pattern!

Phanta-Stick, a new tangle pattern #Zentangle #Zentangle-InspiredArt #TanglePatterns

Yesterday, I posted a review (and a giveaway) on the new Rhodiarama Softcover dot grid notebook.  It's my favorite for drawing up new tangle patterns because the grid gives me a useful guide so I can keep each step about the same size, and start and end my lines in the same place.  And hopefully, that makes it easier for you to learn the pattern!

Be sure to visit my blog tomorrow for another tangle pattern!

Review & Giveaway - Rhodiarama Soft Cover #ExaclairInc #Rhodia #DotGrid

On the December 23, I was the featured fan on Rhodia Drive's blog.  Not only was I honored by the feature, I was offered a choice of Rhodia products as a gift.  I chose the new dot grid softcover Rhodiarama notebook, with a yellow cover.  These dotgrid versions of the notebook are expected to be available in the U.S. in 2017, possibly as early as January.

Although, it wasn't expected, I was sent two of these journals.  So you know what that means... a giveaway! What better way to end the old year and usher in the new!  See below the photo for the giveaway info.

GIVEAWAY INFORMATION

What Is the Prize?
One winner will each receive a yellow Rhodiarama dot grid softcover notebook like the one reviewed here.

How to Enter?
Cut and paste these words: 'I want to win a Yellow Rhodiarama Notebook' into the subject line of an email, and send it to me at  LifeImitatesDoodles [at] gmail [dot] com. (replace the words enclosed in [ ] with an @ and a . and make sure there are no spaces)

When does the giveaway start and end?
The giveaway starts on Sunday December 25, 2016 at 08:00 AM PST and ends Sunday, January 1st, 2017 at 11:59 PST.  I'll notify the winners on Monday, January 02, 2017, by responding to the email they sent as entry.

Who can enter?
This giveaway is open internationally.

Disclaimer:  I received this Rhodiarama Notebook from Exaclair Inc. as a gift for being a featured fan. I was allowed to choose the item from the line of Rhodia products.  I'm excited about hosting this giveaway, but tried not to let it influence my opinion, and all opinions are my own.  I received no other compensation.

RHODIARAMA SOFTCOVER REVIEW

Look & Feel
Specs:
Size: 5.5  x 8.3 in / 14.8 x 21 cm)
Format: Dot Grid (also comes in lined)
Paper: Clairefontaine Brushed Vellum, 90 gsm, ivory, acid-free
Binding: Glued & Stitched
Extras: Interior back pocket; Sewn in color-coordinated ribbon bookmark, Elastic Closure, Rounded corners
Available colors: The lined version comes 16 colors, so it is likely that the dot grid will be available in: Silver, Black, Chocolate, Taupe, Beige, Anise, Turquoise, Sapphire, Iris, Purple, Lilac, Raspberry, Poppy, Tangerine, Orange & Yellow.

I've reviewed many Rhodia Notebooks over the last few years, and the dot grid versions are my favorite for creating new tangle patterns, as well for drawing with a variety of mediums. The new softcover has the familiar Clairefontaine fountain-pen-friendly paper, leatherette cover, rounded corners, and color-coordinated ribbon and binding.

The difference in the Rhodiarama softcover?  The softcover and glued binding.  While the covers have the same soft leatherette look and feel, they are thinner and more flexible.  They make me think of a heavy leatherette cardstock.
There is a trade-off with this thinner cover because I think they pick up dents more easily.

I'm always a bit wary of glued bindings, but then I saw that these are stitched as well.  The notebook can be folded back completely for ease of writing or sketching.

The notebook color I chose is yellow, and it comes with a coordinated orange ribbon bookmark, elastic band and flyleaves.  There is also a pocket in back. I usually store the informational banner there, so when someone asks what size a drawing is, or about the weight of the paper, I can easily find the answer.  My memory is no longer a safe storage place, so I have to rely on these things!  The pocket's also nice when I have the idea for a pattern, and scrawl it on something but can't get to working out steps.  I just put my scrawled drawing in the pocket, for later.

The book lies flat.  As with most good notebooks, if there is too much spring or slope towards the middle of the book, you very gently fold the book all the way back (as in the fold-back photo above) at two or three sections of the book, and it will lie flat after that.

The ivory-colored paper is smooth, but not slick.  It's thin (90 gsm), but sturdy and does not tear, curl or wrinkle easily.  In the case of curling or wrinkling, which you might get with watercolors or other 'wet' media, you can usually weight them out.

The dot grid color is light grey with a brown-purple cast.  The dots might be a bit too light if your eye-sight is bad, but for most it is dark enough to be used as a guide, while tending to fade into the background, once you've written or drawn on the page.

Showing you the true color of the paper and the dots is always a problem because every PC/Phone shows color a little differently.  Then I thought of using a Kleenex to establish a familiar color.  Hopefully, that gives you an better idea of the paper and dot colors.

Performance

I didn't have too much time to set up this review and giveaway before the year ended, so I did a very basic example with Pigma Microns...

...and then an example where I threw a little of everything on the page to create a mixed media piece.  This 'Denizens of the Deep and the Kraken's Egg'...

... was started with watercolors.  I used wet pigment on dry paper, leaving sections dry.  This did cause some dimpling, and a change of the paper texture.  I got that crackly sound I love! Since this notebook is geared more toward fountain pen than watercolor pigment I wasn't surprised with this result.  The main thing is that the dimples went away after I put a weight on the book, and none of the color bled through to the back.

The upper right corner, the Kraken and buildings, was filled using an electric dotspen.  Since it is a mechanical pen that hits the paper repeatedly and quickly, some papers will deboss, leaving little bumps.  That didn't happen with this paper even though it is thin.

I switched to a Stabilio Pen 68, mainly because it can handle going over watercolor.  I didn't expect any problems and I had none.

Once I'd drawn the egg, the jellyfish, the eel monster, I switched to colored pencil.  The Clairefontaine paper in this notebook is a bit slick for creating lots of depth and complexity, using layers of colored pencil, but it does take some of them well enough.  With the added texture coming from the watercolor, I was able to create the transparent feel to the egg, and add shadows throughout.

The last step was to add highlights, and lighten some areas using a Sharpie white acrylic paint pen.  I will admit that I scrubbed a bit too hard in one area of the egg, where I had previously saturated the paper with watercolor, and actually got a little pilling.  I was truly stressing the paper and this was the only spot that gave.  I could easily have avoided it by letting the watercolor dry longer, and not pushing so hard with the paint pen.

By stressing the paper to the limit, I determined that this notebook would work as an art journal for light to middling mixed media art.  From past experience, I know the paper will take glued items decently, but the binding is a too tight for very much of that.

Tomorrow, I'll be posting a new tangle pattern that I drew up using this paper!

Overall

The Rhodiarama softcover notebook has everything that you would find with other Rhodia notebooks, except for the difference in cover.  The softcover is lighter and thinner, which means easier to carry and it will fit in bags or folders that a hardback might not.

While not meant for watercolor or colored pencil, the paper will handle doses of both and can be used for light to middling mixed media.

I think it is more susceptible to nicks and dents though, so maybe not a carry for those that like their notebooks to remain pristine.  (I  like a 'wabi-sabi' look myself.  Sort of the art of living life, complementing my artwork).

Because I really wanted to start my giveaway before the year ended, I didn't do as many examples as I usually would.  If you want to see how well the notebook handles fountain pen, you can find another review at: Writers Bloc

European Bee-Eater: Week 49 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

Done with a variety of Senelier, Winsor Newton, Sennelier and M Graham watercolors.

I wish I'd found the Pixabay photo  archive earlier in the year.  I'd have painted a lot more colorful birds!

Hedging the Brush #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Fabart

I used the cat's tongue and deersfoot stippler brushes from The Fabart interchangeable brush set for this painting.  The deersfoot stippler was especially helpful in getting the effect of the hedgehog fur. I should have used the fan brush for the edges of the fur to get softer edges, but I was trying to see how well I could do with the cat's tongue brush.

(I did a review on this set here).

Different mix ratios of  Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna were used throughout, with Winsor Newton Sap Green added for the background.  It's a 6x6 inch painted on Twinrocker paper.

My reference photo came from Pixabay.com.

Carmine Bee-Eater: Week 48 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

I found a new photo archive that is CC0 Public Domain, Free for commercial use and No attribution required.  Actually two of them, Pixabay.com and UnSplash.com.  (Thanks to Art Tutor for sharing the information on Facebook).  I've been using the Morguefile for quite a while and I like it better than Unsplash, but Pixabay looks like it might be a contender for favorite.

I'd been looking for some good photos of bee-eaters and was delighted to find several at Pixabay.  Just in time, two of my last three birds for '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' will be from these species.

A Quality of Light #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Mijello

This was one of those paintings where I really wasn't sure how to get the effect I wanted, so I just started painting.  Sometimes that pays off, and I did get some of the feel I was going for.  Overall though, the painting is overworked.  I'm still not quite sure how to do what I want, so I'm going to have to play around some more.  Ideas that I have in mind are choosing different pigments, trying to keep more of the white and (my biggest failing) letting one layer of paint dry before fussing any further.

I wanted a touch more light in a few areas, so I decided to use a white acrylic paint pen , smearing the paint with my fingers as I added it.  It shows up in the scan far more than it does in real life.

Approximately 9x9 inches.  Mijello Mission Gold Permanent Yellow Light, Red Orange, Indian Red, Ultramarine Light  on Gemini Coldpress paper.  Only one brush used -  a Legend Kolinsky 3/4 inch flat.

Owl U An Alien? No 2 and a mini review- Fabart interchangeable brush sets #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Fabart

Yep.  Owls are definitely aliens sent to spy on us from Outer Space!

I used different mix ratios of  Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Sienna throughout, with a touch of Winsor Newton Lemon Yellow  for the eyes.  It's a 6x6 inch Twinrocker paper.  My reference photo came from Pixabay.com.

What was fun about this one was that it's the first time I had used any of the brushes from my new Fabart interchangeable brush sets.  I learned about these on the FrugalCrafter website.  I've written a very mini review below, but if you really want to know more check out Lindsay's review.

The Fabart interchangeable brush set

Nothing I dislike outright.  There are a few things I wish were different.  I'll cover those first:
  • the ferrules (the metal piece that hold the bristles onto the handle) don't seem very secure. They are what I would expect for this price range though.
  • the interchangeable heads slide out of the bands in the wallet.
  • the information included about the brushes was sparse.
    • The sizes are not identified (but are about 1/4 inch, except for the fan - about 3/4 inch).
    • Not all of the brush types are identified.  You have to guess which is which.
    • There is nothing to show you how each type of brush is used.
Now, with that out of the way, the things I do like:
  • The price! Although there are only three brush handles, there are 12 interchangable heads, each of a different type of brush. While these are student quality, they are decent student quality and I think the set is well-worth the $24.96 price tag.
  • The brushes can be used for most painting mediums.  Great for mixed media artists.
  • The snap-close wallet they come in is awesome (despite the sliding problem with  interchangeable heads).  It's light and thin and will be great for carrying around.

  • The brushes are of a medium softness, neither soft nor hard.  Sometimes you do specifically want one or the other, but these will be good for a wide variety of techniques.
  • Two things that are important in watercolor brushes are the spring (the ability to spring back to their original shape) and the ability to hold water and paint.  These brushes do a decent job of both--far more than I'd expected they would for the price.  I won't be replacing my Kolinskys, but I will use these brushes often.
  • The selection of brush heads.  The types of brush included in the kit are:

Round Brush, Filbert/Oval Wash, Bright Brush, Angle Brush, Liner Brush, Fan Blender, Flat Brush,
Rake Brush, Dagger Brush, Spotter Brush, Cat’s Tongue, Deerfoot Stippler

For the painting above I used the round and fan brushes. I've never played with fan brushes before and discovered that I can much more easily get the feel of those finest feathers with one.  I wish I had this set when painting my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds'.

Honestly, most people don't need all these brush types, but they are nice to have and fun to play with.  After using this set I may buy larger versions of some of them.  I'll be using them exclusively for watercolor, but they would be even handier for mixed media artists or art journalists.

Lindsay's review includes a video that shows you what the brushes can do.  If you have any interest, I recommend you check it out.

Unidentified Flying Opals #GellyRolls #ZentangleInspiredArt #Fluorescent

I accidentally posted this out of the planned order.  I tried deleting it. But it's still out there in cyber-space, so I'm going ahead and posting two artworks today.  Hope I don't confuse people too much (including myself!).

A combination of Sakura of America's Gelly Roll, Metallic, Glaze and Souffle gel pens on black paper.  6 x 6 inch.

Common Pheasant- Week 47 of 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #WorldWatercolorGroup #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds

I really hate doing the last bit of a project.  Even if I'm enjoying the subject overall, I get so impatient to be finished and want to hurry, hurry, hurry.  It's a definite flaw of mine.

It's very hard to relax and just enjoy painting these birds.  Once I'm done with the '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' I know I'll paint birds with no problem.  The mind is a very strange thing.

Sunset in Rust and Teal #Watercolor #WorldWatercolorGroup #Strathmore

The last of my sky-centric paintings from the last session of my watercolor class (though I still have a couple of urban city paintings from that class).  I used a triad of M Graham Cobalt Teal & Quinacridone Rust, and Daniel Smith New Gamboge on Strathmore's Gemini Coldpress paper.

Silver Black Velvet 1 inch flat, 3/4 inch oval and size 6 round.
